SASTA makes several awards to members each year. While some awards are associated with the quality of papers and posters at the annual congress, there are awards made on the basis of overall exceptional service to SASTA and/or ISSCT. In addition, SASTA provides grants (both in the field of agriculture and milling) to fund research visits by international experts.
Gold Medal - Technological Contribution to the Industry
Criteria:
The nominee should have made an outstanding technological contribution to the sugar industry which has, as a consequence, benefited from the implementation of the design or innovation. The innovation could take the form of (amongst others):
Processes which have improved factory operations and/or product quality.
Major contributions to agronomy which have improved yields and/or reduced costs.
New equipment designs which have been implemented and benefited the Industry.
Mechanism:
Any SASTA member may nominate a candidate, and the detailed motivation must be sent to the SASTA Council for consideration. The Council meets four times a year to consider nominations. The award is presented at the next annual SASTA Congress or AGM.

Robin Renton Memorial Award
Criteria:
Any young engineer – i.e. less than 35 years old – who shows leadership and management potential, and who delivers an outstanding technical paper at SASTA Congress The award is based on content of the paper, as well as the quality of the presentation at the Congress.
Mechanism:
All Congress authors who are engineers will automatically be considered by the Judging Panel appointed by Council. The award is presented at the next annual SASTA Congress or AGM.
Prize:
A cheque for R1000 and a medal sponsored by PGBI Engineers and Constructors.

A cheque for R1000 for the senior author, and certificates for all co-authors.

The best paper in the Agricultural Section of Congress delivered by authors who are not part of either a scientific or technological institute.
In order to be eligible for the prize, half or more of the co-authors must not be part of a scientific or technological institute, and the principal author / presenter must also not be part of such an organisation.
Members of sugar company head offices will be not be considered to be belonging to scientific or technological institutes.
The award is based on content of the paper, as well as the quality of the presentation at the Congress.

All Congress authors in the Agricultural sections will automatically be considered by the Judging Panel appointed by Council.
Prize:
A paid trip to the following year’s ISSCT Congress for the principal author. All Congress registration, travel (economy class) and accommodation (hotel selection to be approved by Council) expenses will be paid by SASTA.
The prize excludes any pre- and post-Congress trips and tours.

The student (only registered students who are not permanently employed will be considered) who writes and delivers the best paper at Congress. The presentation must be clear and well organised. Visual aids must be good quality and appropriate. Also evaluate audibility, confidence and ability to handle questions, technical or scientific content, and value and general usefulness of the paper to the industry.
Mechanism:
All non-permanently employed students presenting papers at Congress in the Agricultural section will automatically be considered by the Judging Panel appointed by Council. The award is presented at the next annual SASTA Congress or AGM.
Prize:
A cheque for R1000 and certificate for the main author – ie the student only
